What is it? It is a non-natural accruing mineral on earth (for now) but discovered by a French chemist Dr. Henri Moissan, when in Arizona at the Meteor site. Called “Meteor Crater” near Diablo Canyon. Working in the industry we see it become more and more popular as a substitute for the diamaond in engagement rings because of it's affordability. However, we want to get more in depth.
Here are some interesting facts, and a misstep about Moissanite:
On the scale of Mohs Hardness, it is a “9.25”. This is out of a scale of 1 to 10.
“9.25” is pretty serious stuff. See the scale just below here.

So it is harder than ruby and sapphire, but still not as hard as diamond. The “mis-step” with Moissanite is that the web site (Moissanite by CHARLES & COLVARD CREATED MOISSANITE) states it Harder than Diamond … well, no!
So can it wear... well, yes. But it would take a while and can happen. I’ve seen it.
It does have a high refractive indices … higher than diamond and sometimes referred as double refractive.

So with all this mumbo jumbo, what does it all mean?
It’s a very usable gem, for our industry, and has genuine merit for fine jewelry use. And I’m in as an advocate... Whether you are looking for a great gemstone for you pendant or earrings, or an alternative to a diamond for your engagement ring... It suits as a pretty good substitute.
